Sixteen of the most prominent Scottish tapestry artists working today present the best of current practice in an ambitious, visually exciting experience, which revels in the meticulously crafted.

This retrospective exhibition by Scottish Tapestry Artists Regrouped (STAR*) includes work from the 1960s up to the present day, showing the diversity of Scottish tapestry over the last 50 years, with work that embraces strong colour and a multiplicity of themes.

STAR* members exhibit regularly all over the world and their work is to be found in public buildings and collections both here and abroad. They are all graduates of the former Tapestry Dept at Edinburgh College of Art, characterised by an openness to what tapestry could be. Many have been connected over the years with the Dovecot, including Archie Brennan and Joanne Soroka, who were Artistic Directors.

Tapestry is a singular medium with a long history, an obsession for some, an anachronism for others, but with a unique sensuality which appeals to the senses in both a visual and a haptic way.

‘When I discovered tapestry I felt that I had come home. Reappraising traditional tapestry I walk the knife edge where medium and message are brought together in a consummate and unique whole.’ Ellen Lenvik

The exhibition also features works from the small but impressive City Art Centre tapestry collection. An exciting education programme accompanies the exhibition.
